A suspected rogue General Service Unit (GSU) officer has been gunned down by police officers based in Bungoma town.
The officer who has been on a robbery spree on Monday evening robbed an Asian family of Sh30,000 and bombed their newly acquired vehicle with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
During the 6pm robbery, the deceased managed to drop a fake pistol and scaled the wall while members of the public pursued him but he managed to disappear into the darkness.
Bungoma county commissioner Dr.Abdi Hassan led a team of security team into visiting the Asian family who also carries business in town.
However, the robber who is still in active service and was on leave engaged police officers in a hide and seek game in Bungoma town.
The police officers drawn from Criminal Investigation Department, regular and administration police units mounted a tough search and managed to trace him in a wine and spirits shop near Kenya Power and Lighting Company offices.
“Our officers tried to ask him to cooperate and be arrested but he drew a pistol and wanted to shoot them but they gunned him down right on time,” said Bungoma county Police commander Dr. Musyoki Mutungi.
He stated that the rogue officer has been robbing unsuspecting members of the public and has been leading a series of kidnappings in Bungoma town.
“We will not tolerate any person who is causing panic to peace loving citizens, I applaud my officers for the work well done, we will deal with all criminals without mercy,” he said.
The deceased Victor Nganga Lubakaya (26) resides from Ndengelwa village, Bukembe West ward in Kanduyi constituency.
He schooled at Kimugui high school and Bukembe boys high school, he trained with National Youth Service, was employed as an enforcement officer with the Bungoma county government but was lucky to later be recruited and absorbed into the police force.
Sources reveal that he was posted to Mombasa but recalled at Ruiru and was undergoing promotional training under the presidential escort unit.
The body was taken to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary.
