Two Bungoma county political and human rights activists are nursing serious injuries after they were attacked by goons.
The alleged county government hired goons attacked Prof.Barasa Nyukuri of Torch Africa and Edward Simiyu alias eDDUH of iKUWEiKUWE platform while they were addressing the press at Bungoma airstrip.
The Monday April 13 incident left the two activists nursing serious injuries after three known goons arrived on two motorbikes and dispersed the then ongoing press conference.
During the incident, the goons who were armed with Clubs and pieces of firewood beat up the two activists leaving them groaning in pain.
They then left on their motorbikes shouting “That is not enough we will come back if you continue holding this illegal meeting’.
During the presser, the two activists had asked Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati to come out clearly and state his position on the misappropriation of the county funds.
“We ain’t satisfied with the explanation given by the governor, he should boldly state what he knows about the purchase of the Sh10,000, 20 litres jericans meant to fight COVID-19,” said Nyukuri.
He stated that they will sue the county government for embezzling Sh11 million borrowed from Bungoma county referral hospital and Webuye sub county hospital.
“Wangamati should not think that Bungoma residents are fools, we can’t buy his lies that the funds were a donation and it been refunded, some of his emergency response team members have squandered the cash and they should take responsibility for it,” he said.
Simiyu stated that the governor was using outright lies to hoodwink the unsuspecting members of the public.
“We lost the money, instead of fighting coronavirus, they turned the Kitty into a cash cow, there is no way he can tell us that they never bought the 600 jericans, Kenyans are very clever and they can sieve the truth from lies,” said Simiyu.
They called on EACC, DPP and other relevant agencies to come in and unravel the puzzle surrounding the lose of public funds.
The duo reported the matter at Bungoma police station and were later treated at Bungoma County Referral Hospital and discharged.
They have vowed to pursue the matter to the bitter conclusion.
Bungoma county government has recently been on news for wrong reasons after they allegedly bought Sh10,000, 20 litres jericans.
Area MCAs have accused the executive for downplaying the scandal yet it is hurting the county residents who needs assistance to fight coronavirus pandemic.
Khalaba ward MCA Henry Okumu Majimbo has condemned the assault incident and added that they should not be intimidated for playing their oversight.
Addressing the press at Bungoma county referral hospital, Majimbo stated that the truth should come out of the scandal that has rocked the county government.
The county government has since distanced itself from the attack and asked the victims to deal with their own issues.
