“The Multi Agency Security team has flushed out over 1,000 people and destroyed over 400 houses illegally constructed in Mt Elgon forest,” said Afwata.

Kenya Forest Service officers have arrested over 30 people including Ugandans who had illegally invaded and destroyed the forest cover.

Confirming the arrests, Western region Kenya Forest Commandant Harrison Afwata says that they have flushed out all the illegal enchroachers and destroyed their housing structures
“The Multi Agency Security team has flushed out over 1,000 people and destroyed over 400 houses illegally constructed in Mt Elgon forest,” said Afwata.
He added, “The security team on July 19, drove out all those people who had illegally invaded the forest land and started cultivating it, they had led to degradation of the forest cover, as enforcement officers, we can’t allow it,”.

He pointed out that no body will be allowed back into the forest as away of conserving it.
“After flushing them out, we are now ensuring that there is no returning back, no cultivation takes place and all illegally constructed structures are completely brought down,” said the commandant.
He stated that the most adversely destroyed forest areas include Chebombai and Chesekwo in Cheptais sub county.
“So far we have cleared 80 percent of the encroached forest cover, i thank these people for heeding to our call and voluntarily leaving the forest,” stated Afwata.
He noted that among the illegal encroachers include Ugandan immigrants and two of them were arrested on July 26.

Afwata says that the eviction exercise which kicked off three weeks ago will ensure that the forest is conserved and no human being is allowed in to cause its destruction.

“We have since realized majority people in Mt Elgon have illegally taken over the forest and have destroyed the ecosystem, the eviction exercise will see all those people are driven out and nobody will be spared,” he said.

Two weeks ago four suspects were arrested at Chebwek beat include of the forest land.
They included Dan Ngeywo Lumbuku, John Lumbuku Omunyu (Charges -cutting down indegeneous tree in state forest for charcoal making.
Moses Kinjo Maasai was arrested with bamboo reeds while Rose Nambuye Turuka was arrested for illegal cultivation in the State forest.
